1974 Harley-Davidson RR350 Racer

1974 RR350 Racer

This 1974 RR350 Racer is one of 26 originally made, quite rare! These racers were hand built in the Aermacchi Harley-Davidson plant in Varese, Italy for the sole purpose of road racing. This bike has the twin disc front brakes, double leading shoe rear brakes, 6 speed transmission, Ceriani forks, water cooled, Dansi electronic ignition and is in the legendary Harley-Davidson racing colors. These machines were similar in design and performance to the Yamaha TZ twins and were successful in national events. Harley Davidson imported a number of 250’s to compete in AMA road races, but the 350 is virtually unknown.

RIP – Nick Varner

Nick’s page at Speedwaybikes

Varner, an 11-year old Junior rider on Honda 200cc and Jawa 250cc cycles and two-time 2011 Junior main event winner at Industry, succumbed to injuries earlier in the day. The Riverside resident crashed at Glen Helen Raceway last Sunday while racing in a motocross event. He was airlifted to a nearby hospital and listed in critical condition. Word came Wednesday morning that the talented rider had lost his final battle.

Nick with one of his wins. RIP, little guy!

Finke Desert Race, Australia

2011 Finke Desert Race from Justin Castles on Vimeo.

The Tattersall’s Finke Desert Race is an off road, multi terrain two-day race through desert country from Alice Springs to the small Aputula (Finke) Community. The race crosses the Finke River, believed to be the oldest river in the world. The race is held each year on the Queen’s Birthday long weekend (second weekend in June).

“Finke” as it is known, is now one of the biggest annual sporting events in the Northern Territory. It is recognised as the richest Off Road Race in the Southern Hemisphere with the added reputation of being one of the most difficult courses in one of the most remote places in the world.

Finke is a unique event in that it enables people of all walks of life to become involved. Rarely would you find an event that has over 600 competitors racing over a 460km course that is open to all comers, it really is the most fun you can have with a helmet on!

I had the privilege of watching this race from 2000 to 2003, when I lived in Alice Springs, Australia. Even as a spectator we had great fun, making a weekend out of it. We set up tents, camped out, had hot dogs and sausages, burnt marshmallows, it was always a great family trip. Even the name of this website is Aussie inspired. My son Zac was born in Alice, so my Dad called him Zacharoo, Zac and kangaroo. And so was born.

Joe Kopp – Racing Pikes Peak on a Triumph Speed Triple

Joe Kopp with Latus Motors Racing, raced a RS Racecraft Triumph Speed Triple at this year’s Pikes Peak International Hillclimb, in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Via, Joe said, “What’s really going to be fun is applying my dirt track experience to the streetfighter style of motorcycle, especially in the gravel portions of the course. It should be quite a ride.” Joe finished with a time of 11:26.530, and placed first in the Exhibition Powersport category.

2011 Pikes Peak Race photos

I wasn’t in the best spot when the motorcycles came through, but took a few shots. Beautiful weather, and it was wonderful to hear that Monster Tajima broke his record, and came in under 10 minutes. Can you imagine going 12.5 miles over 156 turns, with an elevation change of nearly 5,000 feet? The race starts at 9,300 feet above sea level and finishes at 14,110 feet.

Watch some great track time, and listen to the Black Keys, playing “Modern Times”. I’m a Black Keys fan, so I definitely enjoyed the vid.
