Finke Desert Race, Australia

2011 Finke Desert Race from Justin Castles on Vimeo.

The Tattersall’s Finke Desert Race is an off road, multi terrain two-day race through desert country from Alice Springs to the small Aputula (Finke) Community. The race crosses the Finke River, believed to be the oldest river in the world. The race is held each year on the Queen’s Birthday long weekend (second weekend in June).

“Finke” as it is known, is now one of the biggest annual sporting events in the Northern Territory. It is recognised as the richest Off Road Race in the Southern Hemisphere with the added reputation of being one of the most difficult courses in one of the most remote places in the world.

Finke is a unique event in that it enables people of all walks of life to become involved. Rarely would you find an event that has over 600 competitors racing over a 460km course that is open to all comers, it really is the most fun you can have with a helmet on!

I had the privilege of watching this race from 2000 to 2003, when I lived in Alice Springs, Australia. Even as a spectator we had great fun, making a weekend out of it. We set up tents, camped out, had hot dogs and sausages, burnt marshmallows, it was always a great family trip. Even the name of this website is Aussie inspired. My son Zac was born in Alice, so my Dad called him Zacharoo, Zac and kangaroo. And so zacharoo.com was born.

Isaiah gets his new motorbike – Kenyan pastor

Isaiah Kool receives his motorbike! from David Altizer on Vimeo.

Isaiah Kool is an incredible disciple of God. He is a pastor in Ewaso in the Rift Valley. He would walk miles and miles to go to other churches and would walk hours and hours to get to where he needs to go to serve the Lord. Don and Michelle, with the help of supporters, were able to purchase this motorbike for Isaiah to use. He was so shocked and so thankful for this blessing. The bike is a Yamaha DT125.

US Marine Corps – KLR650 – runs on diesel

The diesel sipper gets 96 miles a gallon, uses most of the transmission parts of the Kawasaki KLR650, but does a lot of revision on the engine components. Article on NYtimes goes into a little more detail.

The M1030 is a lightweight, rugged, commercial, cross-country motorcycle, based on the Kawasaki KLR 650, modified for military use. It provides an alternate means of transporting messages, documents, and light cargo between units. The M1030 may also be used to transport forward observers, military police, and reconnaissance personnel. The size and construction of the M1030 makes it highly mobile on all roads and cross-country terrain. Info via Olive-Drab.com

Hayes Diversified Technologies builds them for the military, and they show 3 different models on their website.

2011 Pikes Peak Race photos

I wasn’t in the best spot when the motorcycles came through, but took a few shots. Beautiful weather, and it was wonderful to hear that Monster Tajima broke his record, and came in under 10 minutes. Can you imagine going 12.5 miles over 156 turns, with an elevation change of nearly 5,000 feet? The race starts at 9,300 feet above sea level and finishes at 14,110 feet.
